{"id":62137,"date":"2026-08-28T10:25:58","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T14:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=62137"},"modified":"2026-08-28T10:25:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T14:25:58","slug":"seminary-to-partner-with-local-congregations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2026\/seminary-to-partner-with-local-congregations\/","title":{"rendered":"Seminary to partner with local congregations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new program launching at <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/seminary\/\">Eastern Mennonite Seminary<\/a> in October will form collaborative, co-learning relationships with five local congregations each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program, <em>A Seminary for Every Congregation<\/em>, will bring theological education and resources to the congregations at no cost. It will run through December 2030 with support from the Lilly Endowment\u2019s Seminary Extended grant. <strong>Ethan King<\/strong>, project coordinator for the grant, said the seminary will partner with each congregation around \u201ca central holding question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat could be anything from \u2018We\u2019re looking to start a renovation of our grounds and we\u2019re trying to think about the theological dimensions of placemaking\u2019 to \u2018We\u2019ve had an influx of children at our church and want to think about reformatting around being an intergenerational church,\u2019\u201d King said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe seminary would come alongside a church, its pastor, and some of its layleaders for a year and help them explore their question, connect them with resources, and bring them a baseline education around community organizing, trauma-informed care, and leadership through tension and conflict resolution,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King said the partnership will offer research opportunities for seminary students and internships for students pursuing a master of divinity degree. \u201cIt will also help our seminary learn from people who are on the ground doing day-to-day ministry to inform our coursework,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking to build a network of collaboration and relationships,\u201d King said. \u201cHopefully it will cut down on some of the pastoral isolation and burnout we\u2019ve seen in our research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information about the program, including for pastors interested in getting involved, contact King at <strong>ethan.king@emu.edu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/08\/17130625\/image-11-1024x538.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62138\" style=\"width:650px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/08\/17130625\/image-11-1024x538.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/08\/17130625\/image-11-300x158.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/08\/17130625\/image-11-768x403.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2026\/08\/17130625\/image-11.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>In May, the presidents of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, 黑料正能量, and Union Presbyterian Seminary gathered to sign a memorandum of understanding formalizing their partnership.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New DMin program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funded through Lilly Endowment Inc.\u2019s <em>Pathways for Tomorrow<\/em> initiative, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2025\/three-seminaries-join-forces-to-strengthen-pastoral-leadership-through-a-large-scale-collaboration-grant-in-the-pathways-for-tomorrow-initiative\/\">Seminary Extended: Strengthening Pastoral Leadership<\/a> <\/em>supports a collaborative partnership between Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Union Presbyterian Seminary, and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant also supports a new Doctor of Ministry in adaptive leadership program, expected to launch at all three seminaries in 2027. The Harrisonburg native holds a master\u2019s degree in theological studies from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and bachelor\u2019s degrees in religion and philosophy, political science, and economics from Emory &amp; Henry University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the past four years, he worked in outreach and communications for the Church of the Nazarene in Harrisonburg. He said the experience gave him a unique perspective on ministerial work and the rigors that pastors face on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen this grant opportunity came along, focused on connecting pastors with resources and training and education that is practically and contextually significant to their ministry, I thought it sounded like a great program and wanted to get involved,\u201d King said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are delighted to have Ethan coordinating our collaborative initiatives to foster theological formation in local faith communities,\u201d said the <strong>Rev. Dr. Sarah Ann Bixler<\/strong>, dean of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. \u201cHe brings a keen understanding of the realities facing pastors and congregations, along with a hope-filled passion for equipping them to impact their communities in concrete ways.
