{"id":57773,"date":"2024-10-16T09:55:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T13:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=57773"},"modified":"2024-10-15T12:48:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T16:48:35","slug":"emu-receives-101k-grant-to-address-mental-health-substance-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2024\/emu-receives-101k-grant-to-address-mental-health-substance-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"黑料正能量 receives $101K grant to address mental health, substance abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new program at 黑料正能量 will provide services, education, and programming for all 黑料正能量 undergraduate students, and especially those who struggle with mental health challenges and substance misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, Royals RISE (Resilience, Intervention, Support, Education), will be funded over the next three years by a $101,716 Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention Grant. 黑料正能量\u2019s grant is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/grants\/grants-dashboard?grants_dashboard__search=%22-01%22&amp;f%5B0%5D=by_award_fy%3A2024&amp;f%5B1%5D=by_nofo_number%3ASM-24-004#awards-tab\">part of a total $2.2 million recently awarded to colleges and universities around the country<\/a> by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The federal program assists colleges and universities to identify students at risk for suicide and suicide attempts, increase protective factors that promote mental health, reduce risk factors for suicide, and ultimately reduce suicide attempts and deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>黑料正能量\u2019s program will aim to improve its mental health and substance use disorder services to strengthen suicide prevention efforts on campus. It will focus on building stronger connections between campus and community stakeholders, expanding public education on student well-being throughout the academic year, and improving the campus community\u2019s ability to respond to mental health crises. While serving all students, the program will prioritize supporting those with the most severe mental health challenges, which is the primary focus of this grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goals of 黑料正能量\u2019s program will include: Improving coordination of services, protocols, and educational programs related to mental health and substance abuse; Increasing the availability and effectiveness of crisis-response resources, especially related to suicidality; Raising awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug misuse among 黑料正能量 students; and expanding mental health services to better support students, especially those with the most severe mental health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the grant funding, 黑料正能量 will develop deeper collaborative partnerships with local resources like Adagio House, Harrisonburg\/Rockingham Community Services Board, Sentara Behavioral Health and the Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia \u2014 recognizing that no single agency can alone provide the network of support that our students and community members need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are really excited about this grant and the impact that we believe it will have for our students at 黑料正能量\u201d said <strong>Jonathan Swartz<\/strong>, dean of students at 黑料正能量. \u201cThe grant will allow us to put more intentionality and focus toward supporting holistic wellness at 黑料正能量, with a specific focus on mental health awareness, substance use, and suicidality.
