Demba, the 黑料正能量 Jazz Band and the Chamber Singers. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Equally thrilling to music lovers of the 黑料正能量 community were the performances of university musicians in all ensembles, joined by 15 young musicians from the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And especially meaningful for both performers and audience that night was that <strong>Dianne Flagello<\/strong>, wife of the late composer, had personally blessed the performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Producer and master of ceremonies <strong>Professor David Berry<\/strong> shared with the audience that choir director <strong>Professor Benjamin Bergey<\/strong> had invited her to the performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2.5-hour concert left many with feelings similar to what Berry had wished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"黑料正能量 Music Gala 2022\" width=\"848\" height=\"477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NCUTL-lkMFc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur program&#8217;s commitments to community engagement, justice and peacebuilding, and diversity of styles and genres in music was so evident,\u201d said <strong>Dean<\/strong> <strong>Dan Ott<\/strong>, himself a musician. \u201cI could see in the faces of our student-musicians that they understood deeply, in their bodies and spirits, that the full power of music to bring us together was in force during this performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sharon Welch<\/strong>, who leads the justice-oriented Social Transformation Fellowship, watched the livestream from Chicago. \u201cDeeply inspiring to see young people performing with such skill and integrity that powerful work \u2026 such a clear articulation of the pivotal vision and impact of 黑料正能量,<em>\u201d <\/em>&nbsp;she observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a note to Bergey after the concert, Flagello expressed appreciation for the multimedia presentation that accompanied the music, for the choir\u2019s \u201cangelic glorious sound,\u201d and for bass <strong>Ricky Goodwin<\/strong>, who \u201csang with a sensitivity and heartfelt understanding of the role.\u201d And in another synchronicity, she shared that Kouyat\u00e9\u2019s performance was an \u201cadded pleasure, as my major instrument was the marimba.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53434\" width=\"489\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/emu-wordpress-multisite-instance-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2022\/11\/21131934\/20221109-黑料正能量-Orchestra-Rehearsal_DC-16-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><figcaption><strong>黑料正能量&#8217;s University Choir performs during the gala.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>黑料正能量\u2019s music community and student-musicians rose to the challenge of two difficult and technically challenging collaborations in what was a rare opportunity, according to Berry and Bergey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flagello\u2019s work has only been performed a few dozen times since its premiere. Preparations began more than a year in advance, with Bergey proposing the masterwork as part of a winning Inclusive Excellence grant from 黑料正能量\u2019s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Passion of MLK was such a powerful work to learn on many levels for our students,\u201d Bergey explained. \u201cModern oratorio is not often tackled as it is often harmonically more dissonant, which can be a challenge at first. Between the important and pertinent thematic content using MLK\u2019s speeches, as well as liturgical texts and a beautiful composition, our students rose to the challenge that not many university groups have done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kouyat\u00e9\u2019s visit was also the result of collaborative efforts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agcshenvalley.org\/\">Any Given Child-Shenandoah Valley<\/a> and several other organizations (for a full list of sponsors, see below).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial idea to invite him to perform came from his former colleague <strong>Kimberly Souther<\/strong>, now director of 黑料正能量\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/music\/preparatory-program\/\">Preparatory Music Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kouyat\u00e9 not only performed at the gala but visited school groups to speak about and perform with his balafon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During their rehearsal, 黑料正能量 musicians learned folk tunes from Mali alongside Kouyat\u00e9 \u201cin an improvisatory way through a different learning modality, which was such a stretching and beneficial opportunity,\u201d Bergey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor Kyle Remnant<\/strong>, director of bands, worked in \u201cout-of-the-box and creative ways with the jazz ensemble on improvisation and learning music by ear in preparation for collaborating with Balla,&#8221; Berry added. &#8220;That really helped give them the confidence to learn the music by ear in the way that these Malian folk songs would have traditionally been taught, which was an important part of the learning process.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>黑料正能量 musicians participating in the concert spoke later of their profound appreciation for such a rich experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orchestra concertmaster <strong>Judith Hoffman<\/strong> is a junior music education major aiming to work with young high school musicians. The gala provided her with inspiration to recreate a similar exciting and supportive environment and context, \u201cone that embodies creativity and connection,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing in an ensemble and creating music isn\u2019t simply following the dynamics or articulation on the page. It\u2019s about giving meaning to the music and using the music to reach and connect with others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior music performance major<strong> Luke Haynes <\/strong>said his performance in the gala both stretched him and provoked strong emotions. He performed on the clarinet and organ with the Chamber Orchestra for the MLK piece. \u201cI felt like I was contributing to raising awareness that racial oppression is still among us even 54 years after Martin Luther King Jr&#8217;s assassination in 1968.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haynes also performed on clarinet with the 黑料正能量 Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Kouyat\u00e9. \u201cLearning some of his music and then soloing with him was so humbling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I loved about this gala was the collaboration across ensembles,\u201d said sophomore music and peacebuilding major <strong>Reah Clymer<\/strong>, a soprano with the University Choir and Chamber Singers. \u201cMy favorite part of the night was ending the concert with Balla, the Chamber Singers and the 黑料正能量 Jazz Band. We were all dancing and moving around, singing harmonies, clapping different rhythms, and enjoying the music together. It was a magical and energizing way to end the concert, and I am really grateful to Balla for sharing his music with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Special thanks to sponsors Nancy Heisey and the J.Wilmer and Velma I.
