He is a co-founder of 黑料正能量\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a> and a longtime Summer Peacebuilding Institute instructor. Assefa most recently taught a course in <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/cjp\/spi\/courses\/forgiveness-reconciliation\">forgiveness and reconciliation<\/a>\u00a0at SPI 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commission was formed after ratification of authorizing legislation by the Ethiopian parliament in December 2018. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The social and political conflicts Ethiopia experienced for many years has caused layers of grudges and tension,\u201d according to a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borkena<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/borkena.com\/2018\/12\/25\/national-reconciliation-commission-legislation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAnd the commission is intended to bring about reconciliation based on the ideals of \u2018truth and justice.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/peacebuilder\/2013\/12\/compassion-should-be-our-starting-point\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peacebuilder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> profile about Dr. Assefa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/aside><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assefa joins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/borkena.com\/2019\/02\/05\/ethiopia-named-members-of-national-reconciliation-commission\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41 members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including representatives of various constituiences, including church denominations, Islamic and Orthodox scholars, artists, athletes, youth, disabled citizens, academia, health professions and lawyers. The candidates were selected based on age, experience, gender, religion, educational background, region and representing three generations, among others, according to a press release issued by the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assefa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a peacebuilding practitioner and trainer in many parts of the world. Operating out of Nairobi, Kenya, he has worked as a mediator and facilitator of reconciliation processes at political and community levels in a number of civil wars in Africa, Latin America, and Asia including Rwanda, Nigeria, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Israel\/Palestine and Guatemala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kenya, he worked with the African Union and United Nations at mediating between the government and the opposition parties involved in the 2007 election-sparked violence. This work led to the power-sharing government that governed the country between 2008 and 2013. He also mediated the conflict between the Government of South Sudan and the South Sudan Democratic Army\/Movement that led to the peace agreement of May 9, 2014.
