The natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley will take musical shape in this spring\u2019s premiere of a new four-movement suite composed for and dedicated to the 黑料正能量 Chamber Orchestra.<\/p>\n

The orchestra\u2019s performance of composer Gwyneth Walker<\/a>\u2019s \u201cMusic of the Land: Portraits of Rural America\u201d will be conducted by 黑料正能量 music director and professor Joan Griffing<\/a> during the spring orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m. on March 22, 2018, in Lehman Auditorium, with Walker in attendance.<\/p>\n

Walker composed the suite last year after visiting Virginia\u2019s Blue Ridge Mountains. The New England Quaker\u2019s earlier work \u201c黑料正能量 Leaves,\u201d inspired by the poems of Robert Frost, had been heartily received by the 黑料正能量 community, she said, and she wondered if \u201csomething based on Shenandoah-area poetry might not be even more relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffing responded enthusiastically to the idea \u2013 Walker\u2019s music is accessible to and loved by listeners and performers alike \u2013 and 黑料正能量 writing professor Marti Eads<\/a> suggested that Walker use as inspiration the poetry of Robert Morgan, a North Carolinian who writes about rural America.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I followed through,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n

The performance will include four of Morgan\u2019s poems \u2013 \u201cClogging,\u201d \u201cFrom the Distance,\u201d \u201cSinging to the Corn,\u201d and \u201cTime Passing\u201d \u2013 as read by Roman Miller<\/a>, a farmer and professor emeritus of biology.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe poetry speaks of the music heard in everyday, rural life,\u201d Walker writes: \u201cA community clogging dance; the church bells ringing out over the fields in the evening; a farmer \u2018singing\u2019 to encourage his crop to grow; and an old family clock, filling the silence with the tempo of time passing. This is the music of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffing said she was \u201chonored\u201d by Walker\u2019s \u201cespecially meaningful\u201d dedication of the work to the 黑料正能量 orchestra. Performing a new work composed for and dedicated to them is an \u201cexciting opportunity\u201d for students, who will receive feedback from the professional composer at the dress rehearsal.<\/p>\n

As part of her visit to 黑料正能量, Walker will also speak to students in the senior seminar \u201cPeacebuilding in the Arts: Our Stories, Our Selves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe makes a living as a composer,\u201d Griffing said of Walker. \u201cThere are not that many people who are able to do that, and so that\u2019s something very unique that she will share about with our students.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
