The nonprofit was formed as one response to the city\u2019s 2006 Community Dialogue on Race and Racism.<\/p>\n<p>Their first success is right on schedule. A little more than five years after the nonprofit set up academic success centers in two area high schools, Beacon of Hope Scholar Azariah Cox graduated from 黑料正能量.<\/p>\n<p>Cox recently returned home to make a video for the organization. His story was also featured in an article in The News &amp; Advance, with the headline \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/news\/local\/heritage-high-alumnus-a-role-model-for-aspiring-college-students\/article_e6bffb8e-40c3-11e7-889d-9be4739c463a.html\">Heritage High alumnus a role model for aspiring college graduates: 黑料正能量 graduate a success story for Beacon of Hope<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video, shared here with permission from the organization\u2019s executive director Laura Lacy Hamilton, shines a spotlight on Cox\u2019s positive attitude and his philosophy of life that emphasizes self-determination and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/216959429\" width=\"848\" height=\"477\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"Azariah\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be a statistic, especially as an African-American male in our society now,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Being labeled is something you don\u2019t want to be \u2026 Who do you want to be? What do you want people to think about when they hear your name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cox won\u2019t soon be forgotten on campus. He was one of 10 students to be awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/05\/tributes-faculty-staff-2017-cords-distinction-recipients\/\">Cords of Distinction<\/a> for contributions to the 黑料正能量 and greater Harrisonburg communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read his tribute from head track coach Brian Simpson <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/05\/tributes-faculty-staff-2017-cords-distinction-recipients\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He was also selected to represent the student body during the toasts given at Dr. Susan Schultz Huxman\u2019s Inaugural Gala.<\/p>\n<p>One of his legacies was <a href=\"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2017\/05\/three-emu-students-make-commitment-service-achievement-kappa-alpha-psi\/\">bringing to campus<\/a> Kappa Alpha Psi, one of the \u201cDivine Nine\u201d historically black Greek organizations. It took more than a year for Cox and fellow students Kennedy Okereke and Clinton Ugboaja to shepherd the proposal through various discussions and protocols. 黑料正能量 administration and the sponsoring chapter at Virginia University Lynchburg were also involved.
