{"id":13169,"date":"2012-06-25T09:27:23","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T13:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=13169"},"modified":"2012-07-20T14:46:43","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T18:46:43","slug":"emu-uva-and-george-mason-co-host-scriptural-reasoning-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2012\/emu-uva-and-george-mason-co-host-scriptural-reasoning-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"黑料正能量, UVA and George Mason Co-Host Scriptural Reasoning Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scriptural scholars from the University of Virginia joined peers from others parts of North America at 黑料正能量 during the third week of June (2012) to experience \u201cMennonite influence, faithfulness and peacebuilding,\u201d said Peter Ochs, co-founder of the annual Scriptural Reasoning Training Tour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Mennonite community&#8217;s dedication to peace is a significant contributor to the practice of \u2018scriptural reasoning,\u2019&#8221; said Ochs, a religious studies professor at the University of Virginia (UVa). \u00a0&#8220;Some of our central leaders and participants are from 黑料正能量.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two dozen people attended the two-day event at 黑料正能量. UVa hosted the first three days of the seven-day training tour while George Mason University hosted the final stop.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1995 by Ochs and David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, scriptural-reasoning groups are scattered throughout the world, including universities in Canada, South Africa, and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Sessions involve Jews, Christians and Muslims reading passages from the Torah, Bible and Quran that are addressing a single theme, such as fire and forgiveness. Photo by Mike Zucconi.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It can become more than a theme,&#8221; said Ed Martin, director of 黑料正能量\u2019s Center for Interfaith Engagement. &#8220;It can become a communal experience, sharing the whole creation of music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ochs agreed, adding, &#8220;You hear and study the passages and discover an inspirational significance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is no &#8220;how-to&#8221; manual for scriptural reasoning, said Ochs, rather experiences by the participants are discussed in connection with passages read aloud. In addition, grammatical constructions, tone and narrative structure are used to deepen the conversation.
