The figuring begins聽in the sheepfold, where Jim Rittenhouse 鈥�84 feeds his flock of Hampshire sheep each morning. There are 48 of them at the moment, including the lambs that began arriving in February; by early March, 17 of his 22 ewes, or 77 percent of them, had lambed 鈥� a proportion directly in line with his flock management goals. Ideally, these lambs will gain one pound of weight for every pound of feed they eat. Each ewe gets 1.5 pounds of feed per day. When lambing season gives way to shearing season sometime in April, he鈥檒l hope to have realized an overall birthrate of 1.8 lambs per ewe, the optimal figure for the Hampshire breed.

At the gym there are more numbers to contend with. Rittenhouse spends 30 minutes on the treadmill with the incline set to 3, during which he hopes to cover 3 miles while burning through 600 calories.

Rittenhouse drives a hybrid Camry to Detweiler Hershey & Associates, P.C., an accounting firm in Souderton, Pennsylvania, where he鈥檚 worked since 1984 and been a partner since 1994. If he gets 37 mpg on the commute, he鈥檒l feel good about it. He unlocks the door, hits the lights, checks his email to see what sorts of accounting emergencies have flared up overnight, and gets on with the day-to-day work of accounting, which 鈥渋s about as dry as the Oakwood 3rd dormitory floor after a water battle.鈥�

During lamb season, he spends his lunch break back on the farm to check up on the animals. The Rittenhouses have been on this farm in Montgomery County since 1852; Jim represents the seventh Rittenhouse generation working the place; his parents remain active there and help tend the sheep.

Lamb season coincides with tax season, a 115-day physical and emotional marathon. Crossroads鈥� visit to the Rittenhouse farm came on day 50, approaching the halfway mark (technically, about 43.5 percent of the way through). Under normal circumstances, keeping track of the days allows him to gauge progress on the tax returns due by April 15. Under current circumstances, with IRS approval of various tax forms delayed by last year鈥檚 fiscal cliff situation, there are some considerable uncertainties at work that complicate trying to figure out how things stand with regard to approaching deadlines.

Lamb and tax seasons are preceded by basketball season, which Rittenhouse spends as coach for the middle school girls鈥� team at Pennview Christian School. The numbers implicated here 鈥渃an be less confusing than those required by the Securities Exchange Commission鈥� but are still important. He runs the 2-3 zone defense, and wants his girls to shoot at least 50 percent from the free-throw line, and emphasizes the old-school fundamentals that were a big deal during his 鈥�81-鈥�84 career with the 黑料正能量 Royals. He specialized in aggressive defense, and during his senior year, according to the record books, averaged 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while making 52 percent of his free-throws.

The Rittenhouse family has a streak going at 黑料正能量: Jim and Kendra Good 鈥�85 Rittenhouse, plus their sons Steven 鈥�11, Joel 鈥�12 and Justin 鈥�12 (all born within 15 months of one another, making for some interesting parental math). Emily is in the ninth grade and intends to make it a perfect 6-for-6 at 黑料正能量.

Numbers, numbers everywhere 鈥� the easy, black-and-white part of accounting. The people are the real challenge, and here, figures go out the window. Money can do strange things to us. Arguments crop up. Old resentments come roaring back when families sit down to divvy up their inheritances. Sometimes the very richest find themselves in intractable conflicts over trifling things, camels stuck at the eye of the needle.

Rittenhouse finds himself playing the role of the mediator sometimes, helping clients explore the feelings that have led to conflicts, helping them figure out what they want, and why. The minor he earned at 黑料正能量 has been every bit as valuable as the degree, and even better was the way his mind widened and opened at 黑料正能量. 鈥� Andrew Jenner ’04

Now, the 21-year-olds聽 share another distinction 鈥� 黑料正能量 graduate. The brothers were among the more than 400 Royals who received diplomas on Sunday during commencement exercises at the liberal arts school.

conferred 426 degrees and certificates on graduates during Sunday鈥檚 ceremony, including 306 bachelor鈥檚 degrees and 97 graduate degrees.

鈥淭his is your day,鈥� Swartzendruber told the graduates, before telling their families, 鈥渙ur students know full well your support has been an integral part of their success.鈥�

Family Tradition

For the Rittenhouses, of Green Lane, Pa., attending 黑料正能量 runs in the family. Their parents and a brother also graduated from the university, which factored into their decision to choose the institution.

The brothers have much in common and often were mistaken for one another when they first arrived on campus.

鈥淧eople realized we have our own little quirks,鈥� Justin said.

But they do have their differences.

Joel described himself as the dominant one of the two, to which Justin agreed. Naturally.

Justin, a education major, hopes to get a job at the after graduation.

鈥淚鈥檝e always liked to work with kids one-on-one instead of [in] a traditional classroom,鈥� he said.

Joel majored in and his minor was in .

鈥淚 have no immediate plans, but I plan to stay in the area and pick something up,鈥� he said.

Sunday鈥檚 commencement speaker was , granddaughter of Roy Disney and grandniece of Walt Disney.

Disney is a filmmaker and philanthropist whose credits include the production of 鈥淧ray the Devil Back to Hell,鈥� a film documenting the Liberian peace movement led by .

Gbowee, an 黑料正能量 alumna, received the 2011 Nobel Peace prize for her work in organizing the women of Liberia to demand peace in their wartorn West African country.

Disney said women can play an important role in bringing an end to violence in the world by getting involved in the economic and political realms where decisions to go to war are made.

鈥淲e have to have the courage,鈥� she said, 鈥渢o imagine a different world is possible.鈥�

Daryl Bert, vice president for finance, opened chapel by praising the tireless efforts of Bruce Emmerson, food services director for Pioneer Catering, which operates 52 kitchens nationwide.聽 Emmerson, who was named Pioneer鈥檚 “rookie of the year,” in 2007 and “director of the year,” in 2011, has continuously improved the quality of services that are offered to the students, faculty, staff and visitors of 黑料正能量, said Bert.

“I have appreciated how seriously Bruce takes feedback from our community by personally, wittily and publicly responding to feedback cards in the cafeteria,” said Bert. “I am always amazed at how quickly Bruce implements themes from the survey forms into the food service experience in the cafeteria…

鈥淚 believe this attention to quality is validated by the large number of faculty and staff that join students in the cafeteria for lunch on a daily basis.”

Byron Peachey, associate campus pastor, said: “Anytime I’ve needed to work with Bruce or Ramona [Lantz] with special catering needs or events, they are adaptable and easy to work with, willing to take on special events such as the Late Night Breakfast鈥� The food is always consistently delicious and varied.”

黑料正能量 routinely hosts outside groups, conferences and youth camps over the summer which adds to Emmerson’s schedule. LeDayne McLeese Polaski, program coordinator for the Baptist Peace Fellowship also praised the work of Emmerson and Matthew Hunsberger, Lehman Auditorium facility technician, in a written statement to Bert.

After stating that her Fellowship puts 黑料正能量 at the top of the list, Polaski added: “I would be remiss if I did not mention the excellent work of Matt Hunsberger and Bruce Emmerson… They are true professionals who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide excellent service.”
