Homecoming and Inauguration Weekend 2026 was one for the history books. It featured a first-of-its-kind gala that celebrated 黑料正能量鈥檚 history, a concert by The Steel Wheels on the campus Front Lawn, and, as the centerpiece of the weekend, the investiture of the Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus as the university鈥檚 10th president.

There were plenty of events to attend and people to meet. In case you missed any of the festivities, we鈥檝e rounded up some of the highlights below!

Community Partners Luncheon

A networking event bringing together business owners, local leaders, and government officials from across the Shenandoah Valley kicked off inauguration weekend by recognizing 黑料正能量鈥檚 community partnerships.

Writers Read

The homecoming festivities continued the following evening with a Writers Read featuring Patricia Grace King 鈥89, author of Those Who Vanish, and moderator Esther Harder 鈥03.

Golden Alumni Luncheon

Former classmates reminisced about their time on campus at 黑料正能量鈥檚 Golden Alumni Luncheon, held at Martin Chapel for alumni who attended Eastern Mennonite 50 years ago or more.

The Inaugural Evening: An All-Black Affair

Yoder Arena took on an air of elegance on Oct. 9 as donors and other university supporters gathered for The Inaugural Evening: An All-Black Affair, a gala celebrating 黑料正能量鈥檚 history.

黑料正能量 Athletics Hall of Honor

Four former student-athletes were inducted into the 黑料正能量 Athletics Hall of Honor on Oct. 9. The 25th annual ceremony, held at MainStage Theater, featured tributes to 2026 honorees Sarah Roth Shank 鈥10, Ryan Eshleman-Robles 鈥13, Hannah Chappell-Dick 鈥16, and Jess (Rheinheimer) Bishop 鈥16.

A Cappella Collective

The night wrapped up with an a cappella concert at Lehman Auditorium, where local groups featuring many 黑料正能量 alumni joined forces for a performance.

The Investiture of the Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus

Beginning at the 10th hour of the 10th day of the 10th month of 黑料正能量鈥檚 110th year, an investiture ceremony in Yoder Arena formally inaugurated the Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus as the university鈥檚 10th president and first Black president.

黑料正能量 TenTalks

黑料正能量 hosted its annual TenTalks event Saturday afternoon, featuring Alumni of the Year Eric Brubaker 鈥01 and Trent Wagler 鈥02 of The Steel Wheels, Distinguished Service Award recipient Cynthia Lapp 鈥86, and Outstanding Young Alum Award recipient Kirk Livers 鈥11. Each had 10 minutes to impact, influence, and inspire the crowd.

Royal City Celebration

The sound of Americana and folk rock music filled the 黑料正能量 Front Lawn on Saturday afternoon as The Steel Wheels performed at the third annual Royal City Celebration. It marked the first time the alumni-fronted band had performed on campus since the 2017 Centennial Homecoming celebration. The band, which has performed for more than 20 years, will make its on Sunday.

As he listened to the music, John Shenk 鈥71 remarked on the lineup of events during Homecoming and Inauguration Weekend.

鈥淵esterday, with the three events I was at, I thought, 鈥楬ow could they improve from that today?鈥欌 said Shenk, who also attended the Golden Alumni Luncheon, the All-Black Affair, and the a cappella concert. 鈥淲ell, they totally outdid it!鈥

黑料正能量 inducts four athletes into Hall of Honor /now/news/2026/emu-inducts-four-athletes-into-hall-of-honor/ /now/news/2026/emu-inducts-four-athletes-into-hall-of-honor/#respond Fri, 16 Oct 2026 17:11:20 +0000 /now/news/?p=62532 Four former student-athletes were inducted into the 黑料正能量 Athletics Hall of Honor on Oct. 9. The 25th annual ceremony, held at MainStage Theater, featured tributes to 2026 honorees Sarah Roth Shank 鈥10, Ryan Eshleman-Robles 鈥13, Hannah Chappell-Dick 鈥16, and Jess (Rheinheimer) Bishop 鈥16.

Sarah Roth Shank 鈥10, field hockey

Presented by teammate Kristina Landis Yoder 鈥08

Roth Shank brought energy and laughter to practices and games, uplifted and encouraged her teammates, and brought a combination of positivity and tough love that elevated play and team morale, Landis Yoder said.

鈥淪he sprinted to every ball, her small passing game was strong, and she was feisty in the circle,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he genuinely found joy in the game and her determination was contagious.鈥

During her four seasons on the team, Roth Shank helped lead the team to four consecutive ODAC championship game appearances. After graduating with a degree in history, she served as assistant coach of the field hockey team and earned an MA in conflict transformation from the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding in 2014. In 2017, she and her husband moved to New Zealand, where she completed a PhD in public policy. They now live in Columbus, Ohio, where she teaches at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Accepting the honor, Roth Shank said she was 鈥済enuinely surprised鈥 to hear she was considered for it.

鈥淚 have never been the most skilled on the field,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e never been the highest goal scorer, nor broken records for defensive saves. 鈥 However, in reflecting and preparing for this speech, there is one label that came to mind that I will own. I am a workhorse. I am committed, competitive, and driven. When I think back on my team, it was full of workhorses like me.鈥

Ryan Eshleman-Robles 鈥13, men鈥檚 soccer

Presented by former coach Roger Mast 鈥85

Defenders are rarely inducted into the Hall of Honor, Mast said, with the recognition typically going to attacking players. But Eshleman-Robles鈥 legacy at 黑料正能量 extends far beyond the goals he prevented, games he played, and records he helped establish.

鈥淗is legacy is defined by the way he competed, the way he represented his teammates and his university, and the lasting impact he made on the 黑料正能量 soccer program,鈥 Mast said. 鈥淗e helped create a culture in which teammates challenged one another to become better players and better people.鈥

A double major in biology and philosophy and theology, Eshleman-Robles appeared in 77 matches as a center back in his four seasons. In 2012, he was named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He recently completed his PhD at Texas Tech University and now teaches English at Eastern Mennonite School and coaches its varsity boys soccer team.

Eshleman-Robles, in his speech at the ceremony, recounted some of the mistakes from the field that still linger in his mind.

鈥淏eing a defender is sort of an inherently negative thing,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e always in worst-case scenario mode, thinking, 鈥榃hat is the worst thing that could happen and how do I keep that from happening?鈥 You expect the worst, and you definitely don鈥檛 expect a call from the Hall of Honor.鈥

鈥淭hanks for helping me remember that I was who I wanted to be, at least most of the time,鈥 he said.

Hannah Chappell-Dick 鈥16, women鈥檚 cross-country and track and field

Presented by former coach Jason Lewkowicz

Lewkowicz recalled his first season coaching at 黑料正能量 in 2011 and recruiting Chappell-Dick, whom he described as 鈥淚vy League caliber, athletically and academically.鈥 The former coach, who now serves as director of athletics for Bethel University (Indiana), said he鈥檚 often asked to define success.

鈥淢y answer is predicated on being faithful to what鈥檚 been entrusted to you,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen I think of someone who modeled that, who was faithful with what was entrusted and continues to be, Hannah is one of those people.鈥

A biology major, Chappell-Dick qualified twice for the NCAA national championships in cross-country. In track and field, she won 11 ODAC championships and qualified for five national championships. She now serves as head cross-country coach and assistant men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 track and field coach at Amherst College.

Chappell-Dick read entries from a running log she kept as a student. From her first day of college training in 2012 to her last workout at 黑料正能量 in May 2016, she shared her experiences navigating obstacles and recovering from injuries, running to clear her head, forming friendships with teammates, and competing for championships.

鈥淚 think about everything we experienced in our sport,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ll the lessons we keep learning about the world and about ourselves. The confidence gained and shattered and rebuilt again. The failure that didn鈥檛 break us. I feel so fortified for life by all this failure. I have a framework now for facing hard things.鈥

Jess (Rheinheimer) Bishop 鈥16, women鈥檚 basketball

Presented by former coach Kevin Griffin 鈥93

Griffin shared four stories illustrating Bishop’s character, from watching her play in high school while recruiting her older sister, Steph, to her first game off the bench, when she scored 14 points against Messiah College. He connected Bishop’s humility to Proverbs 27:2: 鈥淟et someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.鈥

鈥淪omehow, with all your humility and all your abilities and all the class that anybody has ever played with, you managed to win every individual accolade you could win and won a bunch of games as a teammate and you let other people praise you and you didn鈥檛 call any attention to yourself,鈥 he said.

A nursing major from Manheim, Pennsylvania, Bishop helped lead the Royals to an 84-26 record and two ODAC Tournament championship game appearances during her four years at 黑料正能量. She was awarded the Jostens Trophy, which recognizes the top Division III basketball player nationwide, and finished her career with the third-most points in program history.

She shared some of the moments she鈥檒l never forget from her time on the team, including the early morning workouts, bus rides, and team dinners at the caf. She also dedicated the honor to her mom, who was diagnosed with colon cancer during her senior year of high school and underwent chemotherapy treatments for six years before passing away in 2018.

鈥淪he was 黑料正能量鈥檚 biggest fan and sacrificed so much to get to all of our home games,鈥 Bishop said. 鈥淲atching us play basketball was one of her true joys in life and I truly believe that kept her fighting for all the years she did. She was a proud Royal and I couldn鈥檛 accept a selection to the Hall of Honor without mentioning her and my dad.鈥

Hall of Honor: Hannah Chappell-Dick 鈥16 /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-hannah-chappell-dick-16/ /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-hannah-chappell-dick-16/#comments Mon, 07 Sep 2026 11:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=61816 This is the final of four profiles about the 2026 inductees of the 黑料正能量 Athletic Hall of Honor. For more information about the Hall of Honor and a full list of inductees, visit .

A last-minute road trip led Hannah Chappell-Dick 鈥16 to 黑料正能量, where she became one of the most accomplished distance runners in program history.

A biology major with minors in exercise science and honors, Chappell-Dick wasn鈥檛 initially focused on Mennonite colleges. She joined a friend traveling to Honors Weekend and quickly found herself drawn to 黑料正能量.

鈥淚 absolutely loved it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 stayed overnight in the dorms, and we stayed up really late talking about ideas. It just felt like the people were really invested in intellectual curiosity.鈥

The Bluffton, Ohio, native made an immediate mark on 黑料正能量 athletics. In cross-country, she earned First Team All-ODAC honors four times, was a two-time All-South/Southeast Region selection, qualified twice for the NCAA National Championships, and earned All-American honors in 2015.

Her track and field career was even more decorated. Chappell-Dick won 11 ODAC championships, earned 12 First Team All-ODAC honors, and qualified for five NCAA National Championships. She became a four-time All-American in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500 meters, received two Co-黑料正能量 Female Athlete of the Year awards and the Co-黑料正能量 Female President鈥檚 Award, and was named a top-30 honoree for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award after winning the ODAC鈥檚 Marjorie Berkley Award in 2016.

While she graduated holding 10 school records, Chappell-Dick says 黑料正能量鈥檚 greatest influence was its emphasis on global citizenship.

鈥満诹险芰 gave me the tools to see people who are different from me as people first.鈥

She is now head cross-country coach and assistant men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 track and field coach at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Chappell-Dick will be honored at a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, during Homecoming 2026. For a full schedule of Homecoming events and activities, visit .

Hall of Honor: Jess Rheinheimer Bishop 鈥16 /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-jess-rheinheimer-bishop-16/ /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-jess-rheinheimer-bishop-16/#respond Mon, 31 Aug 2026 11:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=61776 This is the third of four profiles about the 2026 inductees of the 黑料正能量 Athletic Hall of Honor. For more information about the Hall of Honor and a full list of inductees, visit .

Jess Rheinheimer Bishop 鈥16 chose 黑料正能量 because of its people. The Manheim, Pennsylvania, native appreciated head women鈥檚 basketball coach Kevin Griffin鈥檚 persistence in recruiting her, but it was 黑料正能量鈥檚 diverse community that ultimately set it apart.

鈥淚 wanted something a little different,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 appreciated all the different backgrounds and the people I knew I was going to be playing with.鈥

A nursing major, Bishop became one of the most decorated women鈥檚 basketball players in program history. She helped lead the Royals to an 84-26 record and two ODAC Tournament championship game appearances during her four-year career.

After earning All-ODAC Second Team honors as a sophomore, Bishop exploded onto the national stage in 2014-15. She was named ODAC Player of the Year, VaSID State Player of the Year, a D3hoops.com First Team All-American, and the recipient of the Jostens Trophy, awarded annually to the top NCAA Division III basketball player for excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. She also earned Co-黑料正能量 Female Athlete of the Year honors.

As a senior, Bishop repeated as ODAC Player of the Year, was named D3hoops.com South Region Player of the Year, and earned another D3hoops.com All-American selection. She also received the Co-黑料正能量 Female Athlete of the Year and Co-黑料正能量 Female President鈥檚 Award. She finished her career with 1,567 points, the third-most in program history.

Today, Bishop has spent a decade as an oncology nurse at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She credits Coach Griffin with teaching her that effective leadership requires more than setting an example.

鈥淣ot just leading by example, but offering encouraging words … and being a mentor.鈥

She and her husband, Jonny 鈥17, have two children, Turner and Aven.

Bishop will be honored at a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, during Homecoming 2026. For a full schedule of Homecoming events and activities, visit .

Hall of Honor: Sarah Roth Shank 鈥10 /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-sarah-roth-shank-10/ /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-sarah-roth-shank-10/#respond Mon, 24 Aug 2026 11:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=61774 This is the second of four profiles about the 2026 inductees of the 黑料正能量 Athletic Hall of Honor. For more information about the Hall of Honor and a full list of inductees, visit .

Sarah Roth Shank 鈥10 faced a difficult college choice: follow her siblings to Goshen College to play soccer or attend 黑料正能量 to continue her field hockey career. She chose 黑料正能量, a decision that launched an outstanding athletic career and opened the door to countless opportunities beyond the field.

A history major from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with minors in pre-law, political studies, and peacebuilding, Roth Shank was a four-year midfielder for Royals field hockey, helping lead the team to four consecutive ODAC championship game appearances. She earned All-ODAC honors three times, including First Team recognition in 2007 and 2009, was twice named to the VaSID All-State Second Team, and earned a spot on the 2009 All-ODAC Tournament Team. In 2010, she received the 黑料正能量 President鈥檚 Award, recognizing excellence in academics, athletics, faith, leadership, campus involvement, and community service.

Beyond athletics, Roth Shank embraced campus life.

鈥淚 was highly driven and wanted to be involved,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn’t need to just hyperfocus on playing my sport. I was able to do that, go on a cross-cultural, and be involved in student leadership.鈥

After spending the past nine years in New Zealand, while she earned a PhD in public policy and restorative justice, Roth Shank is returning to the United States with her husband, Benjamin 鈥10, and their two children. The family is settling in Columbus, Ohio, where she will continue her consulting work while teaching university courses at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Roth Shank will be honored at a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, during Homecoming 2026. For a full schedule of Homecoming events and activities, visit .

Hall of Honor: Ryan Eshleman-Robles ’13 /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-ryan-eshleman-robles-13/ /now/news/2026/hall-of-honor-ryan-eshleman-robles-13/#respond Mon, 17 Aug 2026 13:56:06 +0000 /now/news/?p=61778 This is the first of four profiles about the 2026 inductees of the 黑料正能量 Athletic Hall of Honor. For more information about the Hall of Honor and a full list of inductees, visit .

For Ryan Eshleman-Robles 鈥13, choosing 黑料正能量 was an easy decision. A Harrisonburg native and third-generation Royal, he followed his father, Rodney Eshleman 鈥88, and grandfather, D. Rohrer Eshleman 鈥45, to 黑料正能量 after playing soccer at Eastern Mennonite School.

鈥淚 knew where I was and why,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 loved it. It was an easy choice for me.鈥

A biology and philosophy & theology double major with an English minor, Eshleman-Robles anchored the Royals鈥 defense for four seasons, appearing in 77 matches as a center back. Though defenders rarely receive the spotlight, he embraced the role, saying he gave up 鈥渋ndividual glory to get some wins.鈥

His play earned him two First Team All-ODAC selections, two VaSID All-State First Team honors, and a spot on the 2011 ODAC All-Tournament Team. In 2012, he was named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

His career culminated with the 2012-13 黑料正能量 President鈥檚 Award, recognizing excellence in academics, athletics, faith, leadership, campus involvement, and community service.

Having recently completed a PhD at Texas Tech University, Eshleman-Robles, who lives in Rockingham County with his wife, Valeria, and their two children, is returning to where his journey began. This fall, he will teach English at Eastern Mennonite School while serving as head varsity boys soccer coach.

Eshleman-Robles will be honored at a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, during Homecoming 2026. For a full schedule of Homecoming events and activities, visit .

ODAC Hall of Fame: Jewel Lehman 鈥87 /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-jewel-lehman-87/ /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-jewel-lehman-87/#respond Thu, 05 Feb 2026 19:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=60549 In August 2025, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its inaugural class of 50 to the ODAC Hall of Fame. Four Royals were named to the ODAC’s first-ever class. Over the next week, 黑料正能量 Athletics will celebrate all four inductees with articles highlighting their illustrious playing and post-黑料正能量 careers. Our next inductee is Jewel Lehman ’87.

黑料正能量’s final ODAC Hall of Famer, Lehman had a standout volleyball career for the Royals. She was an AVCA South Regional All-American in 1986. She was a three-time ODAC Player of the Year (1984, 1985, and 1986) and was a four-time All-ODAC First Team honoree.

While at 黑料正能量, her teams won four straight ODAC Championships from 1983-86. At the time of her graduation, she was 黑料正能量’s all-time leader in career service aces with 203, and set the single-season service aces record with 108. After her graduation in 1987, she became the first woman to have her jersey retired. She was also inducted into the 黑料正能量 Hall of Honor immediately following her graduation, as a part of the class of 1987.

After leaving 黑料正能量, Lehman had a strong career on the sidelines as a women鈥檚 volleyball coach at the Division I and Division III levels. At DI Campbell University, she patrolled the sidelines from 1994-97. In her four seasons, she coached the Camels to 69 wins, and is second all-time in career coaching wins at the school.

Lehman then earned her doctoral degree in exercise science from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and returned to coaching at DIII Goshen College. She was the head coach of the Maple Leafs women鈥檚 volleyball team from 2004 to 2008. She is also a professor and department chair of kinesiology at Goshen.

Over the next week, 黑料正能量 Athletics will celebrate all four inductees with articles highlighting their illustrious playing and post-黑料正能量 careers. Our next inductee is Erik Kratz ’02.

It could be argued that Kratz is the most successful athlete to come out of 黑料正能量. A four-year member of the Diamond Royals, Kratz was an NCAA Second Team All-American in 2002 and a First Team All-South Region honoree in 2001 and 2002. Those two seasons also saw Kratz named the ODAC Player of the Year and All-ODAC First Team. He was named All-ODAC Second Team during the 2000 season.

He holds the ODAC and 黑料正能量 career record in doubles (77), hits (220), and putouts (1019), and the 黑料正能量 record in runs scored (147), home runs (33), RBIs (159), batting average (.415), slugging percentage (.762), total bases (404), and games played (155). Kratz had his jersey retired after his final game in 2002, and was inducted into the 黑料正能量 Hall of Honor in 2012. 听

He was drafted in the 2002 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, and made his MLB debut in 2010 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his 11-year MLB career, he played for the Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, and the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2019, he was selected for Team USA in the 2019 WBSC Premier12, in which he was named the best catcher of the tournament.

Kratz is now the head varsity baseball coach at Dock Mennonite Academy, where he graduated from in 1998. He is also a co-host of the YouTube podcast Foul Territory.听

ODAC Hall of Fame: Missy Hensley ’92 /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-missy-hensley-92/ /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-missy-hensley-92/#comments Mon, 02 Feb 2026 19:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=60526 In August 2025, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its inaugural class of 50 to the ODAC Hall of Fame. Four Royals were named to the ODAC’s first-ever class. Over the next week, 黑料正能量 Athletics will celebrate all four inductees with articles highlighting their illustrious playing and post-黑料正能量 careers. Our next inductee is Missy Hensley ’92.

Hensley had one of the best women’s basketball careers in ODAC history. A four-year standout for 黑料正能量, she played in Harrisonburg from 1988-92. During that time, she was named a Kodak All-American Honorable Mention (1992) and a Kodak Regional All-American (1992). At the time of her graduation, she was the ODAC’s all-time leading scorer and would hold that honor for six years. She currently sits fourth all-time in the ODAC for total points with 2,163. That number is also tops in the 黑料正能量 record book, along with being the Royals’ all-time leader in scoring average at 22.5 points per game. She led all of Division III in scoring when she averaged 29.8 points per game during the 1992 season.

She was a two-time All-ODAC First Team member and a two-time All-ODAC Second Teamer. She was also named to the VaSID All-State First Team in 1992. Hensley had her jersey retired in 1992, becoming the first women’s basketball player to have that honor. She was also inducted into the 黑料正能量 Hall of Honor in 1992.

After leaving 黑料正能量, she earned her master鈥檚 degree from James Madison University. She was an administrator in Shenandoah County for 15 years, including serving as the principal at Central High School from 2012-19. During that time, she was named the 2016 Virginia Secondary Principal of the Year and Central was named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School. In 2019, Hensley was named the principal at Harrisonburg High School.听

Hensley, along with 黑料正能量’s three other ODAC Hall of Fame inductees, will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the men’s basketball game against Roanoke inside Yoder Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.听听

ODAC Hall of Fame: Leonard Dow 鈥86 /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-leonard-dow-86/ /now/news/2026/odac-hall-of-fame-leonard-dow-86/#respond Thu, 29 Jan 2026 19:00:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=60515 In August 2025, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its inaugural class of 50 to the ODAC Hall of Fame. Four Royals were named to the ODAC鈥檚 first-ever class. Over the next week, 黑料正能量 Athletics will celebrate all four inductees with articles highlighting their illustrious playing and post-黑料正能量 careers. Our first inductee is Leonard Dow 鈥86.

Dow was a standout on the basketball court for the Royals from 1983 to 1986. In 1985, he was named the ODAC Player of the Year. He was a four-time All-ODAC First Team and etched his name in the record books as the all-time career leader in points (2,192), rebounds (1,102), and scoring average (20.4 points per game). He also set the record for most points in a season by a first-year when he scored 534 points in his first season. His jersey was retired in 1986 and he was inducted into the in 1987.

A giant on the basketball court, Dow has been an even bigger force when it comes to his faith during the 40 years since his graduation from 黑料正能量. He was a founder of the Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association in Philadelphia, and for nearly 20 years was a pastor at Oxford Circle Mennonite Church. In 2017, he left the church to become the vice president of community and church development for Everence, leading the effort to serve emerging diverse communities and churches that historically have been underserved.

鈥樅诹险芰 is family鈥: Highlights from Homecoming 2025 /now/news/2025/emu-is-family-highlights-from-homecoming-2025/ /now/news/2025/emu-is-family-highlights-from-homecoming-2025/#comments Wed, 15 Oct 2025 04:48:39 +0000 /now/news/?p=59877 As Dorothy 鈥淒ottie鈥 Nolt Weber 鈥75 can attest, there鈥檚 a special kind of magic in the air in the days leading up to Homecoming. The retired teacher, who taught for 40 years at Lancaster Mennonite High School, has had plenty of her students go on to attend 黑料正能量. And on Thursday, as she parked her car near the Sadie Hartzler Library to catch up with Systems Librarian Audrey Shenk, she bumped right into one of them.

鈥淚 get out of the car and these two girls are running by and, all of a sudden, one of them says, 鈥楬i, Dottie,鈥欌 said Weber. That student turned out to be Maria Longenecker, a senior biology major who had Weber as an eighth grade teacher.

鈥淢aria was one of the students I wanted to see,鈥 Weber said. 鈥淎nd here she was, the first person I meet on campus. It鈥檚 unbelievable.鈥

Her husband Tim chimed in: 鈥淵ou have to understand, we could be at the top of Mount Everest and she鈥檇 know somebody. We could go anywhere and inevitably someone will say, 鈥楾here鈥檚 Dottie!鈥欌

Weber recalled last being on campus in 2005 to cater the wedding reception of alumna and former faculty member Catherine R. Mumaw. She was one of nearly 70 members of the Class of 1975 making a special trip back to 黑料正能量 this weekend for their milestone 50th reunion during Homecoming 2025.

Members of the 黑料正能量 Class of 1975 reunite at Martin Chapel on Friday.

As she and a group of classmates sat at a table in the Seminary Building on Friday leafing through a Shenandoah yearbook from 1975, they marveled at old photos and reminisced, sharing stories and memories from their time at 黑料正能量.

鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing who I can remember from these photos,鈥 someone says.

Another alumna asks, 鈥淒oes anyone remember taking classes in the old chicken house? Is this the building where it used to be?鈥

One of those classmates, Julia Shultz King 鈥75, traveled all the way from Melbourne, Australia, to attend the homecoming festivities. After graduating with a nursing degree, she worked for the Medical College of Virginia and eventually the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, before serving as a missionary with Youth With A Mission. She has lived the past 13 years in Australia.

She shared a story about putting out a fire in the Northlawn dormitory, after someone had left a candle near the window and a curtain had caught alight. This was the first reunion she could remember attending. She had missed the 50th reunion for her high school in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, because Australia had been in lockdown in 2021, and so 鈥渋t made me extra want to be here,鈥 she said.

鈥淚鈥檓 happy to be well enough that I could travel alone to get here,鈥 King said.

Her friend, Weber, said something similar: 鈥淲ho knows, at this age, you might not be able to come back in another five years.鈥

Alumni from the Class of 1975 pose for a group photo.

This group of alumni, said Harrisonburg Mayor Deanna Reed, who serves as director of alumni engagement and community connections at 黑料正能量, was the only graduating class to ever create a two-volume yearbook. The Class of 1975 welcomed Alex Haley, author of Roots, to campus as part of a lecture music series. And the cross country team made 黑料正能量 history, becoming the National Christian College Athletic Association cross country champion that year.

鈥淭here was also a unique tradition that happened during y鈥檃ll鈥檚 time here,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ewly engaged students were thrown in the fishing pond. A lot of people got engaged that year, from what I鈥檝e learned.鈥

Homecoming weekend is all about celebrating and reconnecting with one another, with this campus, and with the values that make 黑料正能量 such a special place, Reed said during the on Saturday morning. 鈥淲hether you’re an alum returning after many years or a student just beginning your journey, this is a time to remember that 黑料正能量 is family,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd there’s always a place for you here.鈥

Keep reading for highlights and photos from the weekend鈥檚 events!

Alumni attending the Class of 1975 gathering read through an old issue of The Weather Vane.

Seated on a couch in the Student Union, Doris Horst Toll 鈥79 and her husband Marvin took the morning on Saturday to relax and unwind as they sipped on a hot cocoa from Common Grounds and flipped through the latest issue of The Weather Vane student newspaper. The couple from Michigan had returned for Homecoming to connect with old friends and had attended the at Lehman Auditorium the night before. 鈥淚t brought back a lot of good memories of being in that chapel as a student,鈥 she said.

Hall of Honor

The four 2025 Hall of Honor inductees were recognized during a kickoff celebration (pictured) and later inducted at a ceremony in MainStage Theater. Left to right: 黑料正能量 Athletic Director Carrie S Bert, Phil Guengerich 鈥70, Justin Reesor 鈥10, Mitchell Leap 鈥12, 黑料正能量 Interim President Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus, and David Falk 鈥15.

MainStage Theater was packed to the gills on Saturday for a ceremony celebrating this year鈥檚 four Hall of Honor inductees:

An alumna attending the ceremony, Debbie Swartley 鈥08, of Penn Laird, Virginia, ran cross country and track while at 黑料正能量, and said she typically comes to Homecoming every year. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just so much fun to be back on campus,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e typically walk around to see the changes for people who haven鈥檛 been here in awhile, and the kids love it.鈥

Gatherings and reunions

A gathering at Northlawn celebrated 50 years of 黑料正能量’s social work program.

The weekend featured several gatherings, including:

  • one celebrating the 50th anniversary of 黑料正能量鈥檚 social work program and the tenure of Professor Deanna Durham,
  • a gathering of alumni shaped by their experiences in the Middle East during 50 years of faculty-led interculturals to the region,
  • and a 50th anniversary get-together for alumni of the recently rebranded 黑料正能量 Washington Semester program.
Avery Trinh 鈥22 and his mom, Rebecca Dietz 鈥79.

An alumnus of the D.C. program, Avery Trinh 鈥22, was attending the lattermost gathering with his mother, Rebecca Dietz 鈥79. Both of them were in the program while it was called different names (Trinh was in WCSC in Fall 2021, while Dietz was in WSSY from 1977-78) and under different program directors (Trinh was led by Ryan Good, while his mom was taught by Ryan鈥檚 father, Nelson Good). In fact, Trinh said, his mom used to babysit Ryan Good.

It was his first homecoming since graduating from 黑料正能量, Trinh said, and the D.C. reunion offered a way for both him and his mom to get involved.

鈥淭here鈥檚 always a lot of chatter about how 黑料正能量 is changing,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he reason I really enjoyed my time here is the professors who taught me. They were in it to help students grow. So, as long as people like them stick around, I think 黑料正能量 is in good hands.鈥

Chris Fretz 鈥05 (right) at the Homecoming Kickoff Celebration on Saturday morning in Lehman Auditorium.

It had been a little more than a decade since Chris Fretz 鈥05 had been back to Harrisonburg. But for the economic development grad, who now works as a web developer for a marketing agency in Lancaster, the 20th reunion was enough of a draw to bring him back to campus. His wife, Lindsey Frye 鈥04, was a student and staff member for the D.C. program and so they also attended the 50th anniversary gathering.

Some of the biggest changes he鈥檚 noticed since he鈥檚 been gone include Common Grounds鈥 move upstairs and the renovation of the old gym into the MainStage Theater, though other changes less visible have been just as significant.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been encouraging to see the growing diversity of 黑料正能量 and to see that the administration is really looking to meet students where they鈥檙e at,鈥 Fretz said.

Meet-and-greet with Interim President Dycus

黑料正能量 Interim President Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus answers questions from senior nursing major Emily Suarez Nunez.

At a meet-and-greet with 黑料正能量鈥檚 interim president inside the Campus Center, the Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus answered questions from first-generation student and senior nursing major Emily Suarez Nunez. Dycus spoke about her path to 黑料正能量 and to the leadership position she鈥檚 held since July 1, as well as what excites her most.

She called on alumni to loudly and proudly share the stories of 黑料正能量鈥檚 successes and talk to others about how 黑料正能量 has impacted their lives, their children鈥檚 lives, and the ways their families have been nurtured by the university.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not proud enough about who 黑料正能量 is, but we have an amazing community here, a meaningful mission, and it shows up across the world,鈥 said Dycus, who is the first Black woman to serve in the role. 鈥淎nd I am most excited about being able to be the person who gets to advocate for that everywhere I go.鈥
