As someone who鈥檚 made more typos than I care to admit, this is a reassuring thought!

Lately, there鈥檚 been a flurry of activity at our purple-hued Friendly City neighbor, James Madison University, which its move from the Sun Belt Conference to the American Conference.

When this article appeared in The Weather Vane a half-century ago, Dr. Myron S. Augsburger BA 鈥55, BTh 鈥58, was more than a decade into his tenure as 黑料正能量鈥檚 fifth president (1965-80).

In 1965, at age 35, he became the youngest president in the institution鈥檚 history. Four years later, Time magazine named him one of the five most influential 鈥減reachers of an active gospel鈥 in America.

鈥淗e gave passion to the office,鈥 a description of his presidency reads. 鈥淒rama, instrumental music, intercollegiate athletics and international study developed dramatically.鈥

Augsburger passed away Thursday morning at age 97. Read his obituary .

This week, we discovered stories about global tensions, political distrust, and concerns about emerging technology, showing just how much things have changed and how much they’ve stayed the same.

The late Sadie A. Hartzler, who was appointed a faculty member in 1926 and part-time librarian in 1928 and then served as full-time librarian from 1945-61, 鈥渨as the lone exception to the male dominance of administrative roles in the school鈥檚 early decades,鈥 writes Donald B. Kraybill 鈥67 in his centennial saga, 黑料正能量: A Century of Countercultural Education (Penn State Univ. Press, 2017). 黑料正能量鈥檚 Sadie Hartzler Library was officially named for her in 1985. Using stories from the 黑料正能量 Archives, we’ll revisit issues of The Weather Vane and other university publications from 25, 50, 75, and 100 years ago each week.

We’ll select and republish snippets from stories that are:

  • interesting or surprising,
  • relevant to 黑料正能量’s mission and identity,
  • and particularly relevant to the present day.

Note: This semester marked the beginning of the Washington Study-Service Year, now known as the 黑料正能量 Washington Semester, which continues to transform students鈥 lives today!
