Date: Friday, April 24
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Lehman Auditorium
Cost: Free (no registration needed)

Junior vocalist Elie Hoover (soprano) and senior saxophonist Jadon Harley will perform as student soloists with the 黑料正能量 Orchestra at its spring Concerto/Aria Concert at 7 p.m. this Friday in Lehman Auditorium.

We caught up with Hoover, a social work and music interdisciplinary studies major from New Carlisle, Ohio, ahead of the event.

What piece will you perform at the concert?

I will be performing 鈥淯na donna quindici anni鈥 from Mozart鈥檚 Cos矛 fan tutte. My voice teacher helped me choose a piece that fits my voice well. It鈥檚 a lively selection that I have a lot of fun singing.

Is there a specific teacher you鈥檝e been training with?

Shannon Kiser has been working with me to make this piece the best it can be. He encourages me in many ways and always offers insightful guidance to help me improve. [Music Professor] Benjamin Bergey has also worked hard to prepare the orchestra and integrate me into the process.

What excites you most about this concert?

I鈥檓 especially excited to sing in this concert because it鈥檚 a unique opportunity to perform as a soloist with such a large and talented group of musicians as an undergraduate student. It鈥檚 truly an honor to share the stage with my peers as well as musicians from the community. I hope they have as much fun performing with me as I do with them.

What鈥檚 your favorite thing about 黑料正能量 Music?

The 黑料正能量 Music Department has been a home for me over the past couple of years. The ensembles and classes vary in size and level, allowing them to meet students where they are. I always know I have people who will help me improve and classmates I can grow closer to and share this journey with.

Students infuse Shakespeare with pop rock in spring musical /now/news/2026/students-infuse-shakespeare-with-pop-rock-in-spring-musical/ /now/news/2026/students-infuse-shakespeare-with-pop-rock-in-spring-musical/#respond Fri, 20 Mar 2026 19:53:42 +0000 /now/news/?p=60852 鈥淭he Winter鈥檚 Tale: A Musical Adaptation鈥 runs April 9-12 at 黑料正能量鈥檚 Lee Eshleman Studio Theater, with tickets on sale now!

黑料正能量 Theatre brings Shakespeare鈥檚 heartwarming tale of mystery and magic to life in an original musical, featuring hit songs from the 鈥80s and 鈥90s and dynamic choreographed dance numbers. 鈥淭he Winter鈥檚 Tale: A Musical Adaptation鈥 comes to the Lee Eshleman Studio Theater, with nightly shows at 7:30 p.m. from April 9-12.

Tickets for the show are on sale at and will be available at the door, though seating inside the theater is limited and tickets have been known to sell out quickly. Tickets range from $6 for 黑料正能量 and JMU students, $10 for children and other students, $18 for seniors (65+), and $20 for adults.

Content Warning: 鈥淭he Winter’s Tale鈥 contains adult content and mentions of violence. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

鈥淭he Winter鈥檚 Tale鈥 follows two kingdoms torn apart by jealousy, a lost queen, and the love that may bring them back together. When Leontes, the tyrannical king of Sicilia (Elie Hoover), suspects his wife Hermione (Jubilee Soper) of unfaithfulness with Polixenes, king of Bohemia (Samuel Castaneda), he becomes so enraged that he orders her jailed and their infant daughter abandoned.

Sixteen years later, as the seasons shift from winter to spring, the story moves to Bohemia, where Leontes鈥 daughter, Perdita (Emilee White), is now grown and has captured the heart of Florizel (Kayden Beidler), the brash and dramatic son of Polixenes. Will their love be enough to reunite the two kingdoms?

From left: 黑料正能量 students Jubilee Soper (Hermione), Kyah Young (Lord/Messenger), Elie Hoover (Leontes/Autolycus), and Elena Middlebrook (Paulina) during a recent rehearsal of 鈥淭he Winter鈥檚 Tale.鈥

Perhaps best known for the stage direction, 鈥淓xit, pursued by a bear,鈥 this sweet and complex romance is written in Shakespeare鈥檚 signature iambic pentameter. But this adaptation adds a 鈥渘ice little twist,鈥 said guest director Haley Davis: a mix of 1980s and 鈥90s chart-toppers, personally selected by 黑料正能量鈥檚 talented student cast, woven throughout the play. It鈥檚 sure to have the whole audience singing along.

Frequent 黑料正能量 Theatre collaborator Jim Clemens returns as music director, performing iconic rock ballads and pop rock songs on piano, while student Bryan Joya-Estrada, who also portrays the Shepherd, plays various instruments.

The costumes, designed by Rebecca Bailey, blend early modern and Renaissance elements with an 鈥80s and 鈥90s punk rock aesthetic, Davis said.

Rounding out the crew are Shannon Dove as technical director, Sierra Priest as choreographer, and Sarah Peak as stage manager.

Emilee White, who portrays Perdita, crowns Jim Clemens, music director, during a recent rehearsal of 鈥淭he Winter鈥檚 Tale.鈥

The play will be performed in the round, with audience members seated on all sides of the raised stage and in the upper balcony.

鈥淚t鈥檚 more fun when you have the audience right there at your toes,鈥 said Davis, an administrative-professional faculty member of James Madison University鈥檚 School of Theatre and Dance. 鈥淵ou can look up at the heavens or down at the earth, and you have people there to share the moment with.鈥

Choreographer Sierra Priest leads members of the cast during rehearsal at 黑料正能量鈥檚 Lee Eshleman Studio Theater.

It was only after the audition process that it became clear to the production team which play to perform. 鈥淚n a special way, this play was chosen based on the people rather than the other way around,鈥 she said. “I found that this approach, coupled with the students musically adapting the play, gave the team unique agency in the story they wanted to tell.”

Beidler, who plays the roles of Florizel and Antigonus, said they love how collaborative the show has felt. 鈥淚t was so fun helping pick the music, and it really feels like we鈥檝e made this show ours,鈥 they said.

Hoover, who portrays Leontes and Autolycus, said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun getting to play characters who are both so different from each other and from me.鈥

Tickets for the show are on sale at .

One of the play鈥檚 most striking moments is when it travels over 16 years, transporting the characters from Sicilia to Bohemia, from a harsh winter to a forgiving spring. The shift has also felt meaningful for the students, who began rehearsals in winter and are gradually emerging into spring themselves.

鈥淚 want audiences to walk away with a sense of hope,鈥 Davis said. 鈥淭hings can look bleak and cold and scary, but there鈥檚 something better around the corner if we hold on and let time do what it needs to do.鈥

Mayor Reed, fixture on 黑料正能量鈥檚 campus, inspires civic engagement among students /now/news/2024/mayor-reed-fixture-on-emus-campus-inspires-civic-engagement-among-students/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 13:55:00 +0000 /now/news/?p=57823 With Election Day (Nov. 5) fast approaching, students at 黑料正能量 say that having an elected official, Mayor Deanna Reed, on campus has motivated them to become civically engaged.

Reed, who is running for reelection this year, has served as mayor of Harrisonburg, Virginia, since 2017, when she was first elected to City Council. She is the first African American woman elected to the council and also the first to be appointed mayor. At 黑料正能量 she is director of alumni engagement & community connections.

During the second annual Stroll to the Polls event on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Rockingham County Circuit Courthouse in downtown Harrisonburg, Reed rallied students from 黑料正能量 and James Madison University, as well as others in the community, to cast their ballots on the first day of early voting in Virginia. The event aims to increase voter turnout, especially among college students, with marches proceeding from the steps of the courthouse to the city and county polling places.

One of those students attending the rally, 黑料正能量 sophomore Elie Hoover, a social work and music major, said that having a local leader actively involved on campus helps keep her politically engaged. She feels proud to be an 黑料正能量 student, she added, knowing that the school has representation in city government.

鈥淚 want to do my part because she鈥檚 doing her part for us,鈥 Hoover said.

At the Stroll to the Polls event, as she walked along Main Street toward City Hall with a group of other students, 黑料正能量 junior Royale Parker waved a 鈥淰irginia Votes Early鈥 sign and enthusiastically encouraged passing drivers to vote.

Parker, a business administration and psychology major, said she once believed there was no use in voting. 鈥淚 was one of those students who thought my voice didn鈥檛 matter and that my vote didn鈥檛 count,鈥 she said.

But interacting with Reed through committees and clubs on campus has shown her that everyone has a voice and a vote, including her. Reed, she said, has introduced students at 黑料正能量 to political issues they might have otherwise not known about and has also helped them understand the voting process.

鈥淪he鈥檚 inspired me to become more involved and excited to vote,鈥 Parker said.

黑料正能量 senior Kay Pettus, a music major and president of the Black Student Alliance (BSA), proudly displayed her 鈥淚 Voted鈥 sticker as she exited City Hall during the first day of early voting. Pettus, who organized the shuttles for BSA members from 黑料正能量 to downtown Harrisonburg, said that Reed regularly works with BSA and encourages them to participate in civic events. She said that seeing Reed and others speak at the rally was a powerful experience.

鈥淚 like that they were encouraging students and young people to vote,鈥 Pettus said, 鈥渂ecause it is important and our voices do count.鈥

Students who identify with a political party different than Reed鈥檚 say they鈥檝e felt her support. Jason Dwyer, a senior political science and history double major who leads the 黑料正能量 College Republicans club, said the Democratic mayor takes care to engage with everyone on campus. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how many other colleges can say they have a mayor on staff and as part of their community,鈥 he said.

Reed said she felt honored and privileged to know her presence and involvement on campus as a mayor has helped students engage in politics.

鈥淚t鈥檚 gratifying to see the impact of student participation in shaping our community and beyond,鈥 she said. 鈥淪tudents鈥 voices are not just significant, they鈥檙e essential. Their voices matter and have the power to shape the future, and that is incredibly motivating.鈥
